Harvey Charles: 11 months

In Harvey’s 11th month, I turned to sultanas for help when taking photos! He had never had them before and was enthralled by their sweetness, meaning that he sat still for a couple of minutes while I went snap happy!

This month Harvey started taking a few wobbly steps on his own. Very cute and with the kids on school holidays, they were all over him with an intense walking training programme!

Where ever I go in the house, Harvey is never far behind. He knows when I am in the bathroom and sits at the door trying to get in! I love this age. My favourite baby ages would have to be sleepy newborn 0-4 months and around 10 months when they start to get more independent. The six months in between seem to be the hardest for me, until baby learns to crawl and is happy to move himself around the house. Then it gets easier again. I’m excited about the next few months, when Harvey will really start to explore and discover new things – at the moment he is kept entertained for ages playing in the cupboards and drawers in the kitchen.

(Ninja top sewn from an old faithful Ottobre pattern. It comes from Ottobre 4/2011, Baby Basics T-shirt and the funky Ninja fabric is a knit by Lillestoff.)

Harvey always gets excited to see his brothers and sister after school and spends the afternoon crawling around after them. I love it when it is a warm afternoon and he can play in the backyard with them!

He tries to copy things that we say or noises that we make now – and is very good at copying squealing! It’s really cute to hear him forming sounds and mimicking some of the things we say to him all the time.
And even though he is pretty independent and likes to do his own thing, he still loves a snuggle and will happily bury his head into your neck when you snuggle him.

You know what I love about having four kids? By the time you’ve got that fourth baby, you know that time flies and you need to appreciate every little moment (good and bad) with the baby because soon enough he will be a big boy and you only get to do the baby stage so many times. It’s hard and exhausting work, but so special and so rewarding too.
And before you know it – they will be turning 1! Like in 12 days!!! I am in denial…

Hero Vest, Make It Perfect

.A Hero Vest for Harvey

Out of all of the clothing that I sew, I love making things for cold weather wearing. Not sure why, I think I like being able to create something cosy that will keep the wearer nice and warm.
I love Hero Vests for my kids. The older three always wear theirs (even Oscar, the cold-lover will slip his on from time to time!) and I knew that Harvey would benefit from one now that the weather has turned a lot cooler.

He is getting tricky to take photos of now he moves way to fast!
This Hero Vest is super snuggly. I had a little strip of left-over fleece left over from the kid’s blankets and was able to use it to line Harvey’s Hero Vest.

For the exterior fabric, I used some grey interlock that has been going strong for ages…I’ve also used it to make Tommy some PJs and Harvey some trackies and still have a little left! It is a grey interlock that I bought from Crafty Mamas a long time ago and is lovely quality but I don’t always love interlock. It is great to sew with but I find it tends to stretch out over time. I’m happy to use it when the edges are being bound with ribbing or a jersey band though as it doesn’t stretch when it is being held in place by a more stable knit. It is so lovely and soft though. The green ribbing was also from Crafty Mamas.

If you’ve got kids to sew for as the weather gets cooler, I highly recommend a Hero Vest. It’s easy to layer over a long-sleeved tshirt, keeping them warm without the restrictions of a big jacket.
The hood is great, but Harvey hates keeping it on! He will learn…

I recommend sewing a size bigger than you usually would for this pattern because the vest is designed to be layered over other clothing. This is a size 1 and Harvey is just starting to wear some size 1 clothes. I love the change in seasons…lots of sewing for me to do to update the wardrobes ready for the Winter months ahead!

.Harvey Charles: 9 months.

9 MONTHS! I’m in denial. Where has my sleepy baby gone?

It is getting increasingly difficult to take monthly shots of Harvey (aka “The Boof”). The minute I sit him down, he is leaning over and ready to take off so I quickly snap a few shots then get him back into position! Why did I choose a bed as the location for these photos?!

He is moving around faster every day now and getting a lot more adventurous. Just this week he decided that he could crawl down the steps (just 2 of them!) from our deck onto the grass and makes his way around the backyard all the time now! Then when he has had enough he somehow manages to crawl back up the steps and into the house. No one has seen him get up or down the steps yet so I’m not sure if it’s a smooth hike or not, but he doesn’t cry so it can’t be that bad! He is a toughie though, and doesn’t usually cry unless the hurt is really sore!!

This month Harvey has learned to clap hands, wave and give high-fives. As sad as I am that he is growing up, it makes me so happy seeing how the older three kids are with him now that he is so interactive and wants to be a part of everything that is going on around him. They spend so much more time with him now that he can do fun tricks! I often find them giving him a ride on the swing or pushing him around on the little ride-on car.

We have a little family chant that goes, “Harvey, Harvey, Harvey…” while we clap along to the beat and as soon as Harvey hears it he grins and does a little bopping dance for us. So, so cute! As he gets older we are starting to notice some of his personality traits emerging. He seems to have a strong determination and finds a way to get to where ever or what ever he wants. He loves to perform for an audience and continues to be obsessed with food! Happy 9 months buddy!

.Harvey: 8 months.

Look at the 8 month old boof! This month has been corner-turning…you know that time you are always waiting for when most of the bad habits are eradicated and you feel like you can breathe again!

When we got home from New Zealand there was finally a break-through in Harvey’s bad sleeping habits. I think the first few days after being home he was totally exhausted about being away and having rotten sleeps for 2 weeks and sunk into his cot and slept, and slept, and slept. I think that a few days of awesome sleeping seemed to kick his body clock into gear and he worked out how to put more than one sleep cycle together…or maybe it was just going to happen anyway? Either way, it is pure and utter bliss to put him down for a nap and know that he is going to sleep for more than 20-40 minutes. There is finally a routine to his day which makes things so much easier to work around. He has two naps a day now which are usually each 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 hours long, goes to bed around 7pm and sleeps all night until about 6am. FINALLY!

Harvey continues on his happy eating rampage, he is such a good eater and will greedily gobble up anything that is placed in front of him! He isn’t fussed about texture or lumps in his foods and munches away until it is all gone, despite having no teeth yet! And when the food is gone he always lets out an ear piercing scream for more!

He is crawling like a gun now too, nothing stops him. If he wants to be somewhere he will push and cram his way through until he makes his destination! He loves pulling himself up onto furniture and having a good look around and has started being more confident walking around holding onto things too.

We do love him so, even though his chubby cheeks and big lips are getting smaller every month!
