.Not happy, drugs and an apron.

1. Not Happy.

This is he.
Little “Mr-I-Don’t-Feel-Like-Being-Happy-Today”
Crying the day away.
Lots of wind and a very sore tummy.
But he has been good the last 2 nights so he can have a cry day today because I don’ feel tired.
(Typing this with 1 hand – doing everything with 1 hand today)
2. Drugs.

Lil did not get better.
Sunday she was really bad.
Took her to our GP first thing Monday morning.
He said bad ear infection and chest infection.
On antibiotics now and a new little girl.
Loves “meh-cine”
3. An apron.

I am probably the last person around to sew an Emmeline Apron.
Check out the pics in Sew Liberated’s Flickr group.
I finished this apron while I was pregnant, modelling it with a large tummy looked very frumpy.
Here it is today.
Reversible too so if I make too much mess I can flip it over!

.Family Goss.

(Family Goss from a different state…)
Lil was starting to look a little feral whether I did her hair or not. Then it dawned on me that it was probably long enough to try out some piggy tails…they worked and she is the cutest thing again! She is going through such a chubbs stage – ready for another growth spurt up I think. Jaron took her to the hospital this afternoon (before this year I had NEVER stepped foot into the Emergency Department of the hospital and this year our family has been 4 times already!) she has had a really high temp and fever for the last couple of days and has been a bit fluey. Poor little thing has been really pale and cuddly and sleepy. This afternoon I noticed lots of thick ear wax pooling out of her ear and we thought that she might have had an ear infection. The doctor said it was just mild and couldn’t be treated with antibiotics. Hopefully she will get over it all soon and back to her happy little self (it has been nice and quiet for the last few days though!)
Lil could share some of her meat with skinny little Tommy. He is still amazingly little. Took him to be weighed yesterday and at 3 1/2 weeks he weighs 7 pounds, 4 ounces now. Still smaller than Oscar and Lil were born but I can’t imagine him being able to squeeze into my tummy.
He is being unpredictable at the moment. Some nights he can be okay and have a decent stretch of sleep sometime during the night, then we get thrown a night like last night where he woke every hour and wouldn’t sleep much at all. I was over it by the morning and am wasted today. Lucky he is cute!
Oscar started a day a week of pre-school yesterday. He was a bit nervous about starting but really enjoyed it and was happy for me to leave. We only did a half day to start with but he managed okay and will go for longer next week. I’m excited for him – we thought it would be good to start getting him used to a bit of time away from home before he starts school next week and also good for him to mix with other kids his age.
We have some exciting news…big things happening for our family over the next few months! Will keep you hanging and share more soon 🙂

.Tommy pics.

I knew that the silent baby was too good to be true! Tommy has finally woken up…his tiny, quiet cries have turned into a proper baby wail!! At only 2 1/2 weeks old he has already started to change so much. His face is filling out and he is really starting to try and focus on us and is making eye contact when he is awake. It took me awhile to get back into the newborn groove – I totally forgot that a tiny little baby really does make EVERYTHING take twice as long to get done. Getting everyone dressed and ready in the morning takes forever! Its kind of nice that it is winter and we are enjoying lots of inside time, although we have started to feel a bit house-bound the last few days.
We are starting to form some sort of a loose routine which I am really enjoying. It is much easier to get things done when you have an idea of what time the next feed/sleep is going to be. We are getting a 6 hour stretch between feeds from around 7:30pm/8:30pm – 1:30am-2:30am, all other feeds are 3-hourly. Sometimes I wish he was doing the long stretch in the middle of the night so that I didn’t have to get up as often in the night time, but on the other hand it is really nice to have the evening to ourselves and get a bit of kid-free time.
Tommy is great during the day. He has a bit of awake time first thing in the morning, then pretty much sleeps all day long, just waking for feeds. We get the usual unsettled time in the evening (good old “Witching Hour!”) but other than that he is a dream during the day. Night times are the problem…they are very unpredictable. He feeds every 3 hours, which is fine but some nights he will settle straight back to sleep after his feeds and others he is really grizzly and upset. I have finally worked out that he is having trouble with wind. I haven’t had a windy baby before, Oscar and Lil would feed and burp and be happy. Tommy hardly ever burps and I think the build up of wind during the day catches up with him at night. We had these miracle drops for Oscar when he was a baby and they would make him burp instantly if he ever got an upset tummy. They don’t work so well for Tommy though so a lot of the night is spent with me keeping him upright and patting his back or rubbing his tummy hoping that he will settle down and get back to sleep quickly! Hopefully it is something that he will grow out of quickly and that it won’t get any worse than it is now.

The minkee-backed baby blankets I made before Tommy was born have been brilliant. Perfect to wrap him in snugly (he LOVES being wrapped really tight!) and nice and soft and warm. I made him a couple more for rotation because I love them so much…

Can’t remember who makes this fabric, but the funky chooks are cute!Carli bought me some Ikea fabric from Sydney (oh, how I wish we had an Ikea down here!) and I made this cool green hippo blanket from some of it. (For some reason Tommy is loving lying on the kitchen bench all wrapped up when he is awake! Must be trying to get away from the riff-raff down below!)

.Recipe Monday – Guest Blogger.

Here’s Carli again with this week’s Recipe Monday! Remember if you have a recipe to share for Recipe Monday, send me an email 🙂

Okay so this RETRO slice is yummy, easy, feeds many and is cheap to make. Apparently it’s a recipe that’s been around for a long time and I reckon it should make a comeback. Maya didn’t believe me that we were making “marshmallows” until she tasted it.

Marshmallow and Weet-bix Slice

Base:
3 Weet-bix , crushed
1 cup SR flour
¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 cup coconut

130g butter

¾ cup water

Marshmallow:
1 cup sugar

1 heaped dessertspoon gelatin

1 tsp vanilla

Melt butter and pour over dry ingredients.Mix well and press into slice tin. Bake in a moderate oven for 15-20 mins until just brown (not too brown!). Allow the base to cool. While the base is cooling, bring the water, sugar, gelatin and vanilla to the boil, and boil for 3 mins.Allow the marshmallow mixture to cool in the fridge before beating until light and fluffy. Pour over base and allow to set in the fridge.

Tips:

Use baking paper so the slice can be lifted out easily.

We sprinkled coconut over the top.

Marshmallow can be dyed any colour.

(If you’re husband is picky with food like mine don’t let him know it has weet-bix in it – some people have a hard time with the weet-bix and marshmallow coming together. Like mixing porridge with a snickers bar.)

.Yesterday I sewed!.

Life is slowly finding the new “normal” – I thought it would be many weeks before I got the sewing machine out again, but yesteray all things seemed to come together nicely and I managed to finish the project I started on the day I went into labour with Tommy. A new pattern…for the boys this time! I’ve mastered putting it all together and now have to get onto writing it up. Hopefully it won’t take too long, but I’m not promising anything!
Horray for the weekend, it is so nice having Jaron around to play with the older kids. We have borrowed a really cool bike trailer from a friend and Oscar and Lil sit in it while Jaron takes them for bike rides every weekend. We really need to be returning it soon, but I think it is definitley something that we will invest in for ourselves because the kids love it a lot, Jaron likes that his bike rides become more of a workout for him and I LOVE it that they are out getting some fresh air and a change of scenery while I can have the house to myself and get some much needed chores done!

The babe has been VERY kind to me the last few nights. Feeding at 8:30pm then going to sleep and not waking until 1:30am-2:30am. It is great having some child-free hours when Tommy goes to bed and then being able to get a few hours sleep before he wakes for the next feed. I’m hoping that the trend continues, but not holding my breath as I’ve learned by now to expect change at any time with babies!

I can’t believe Tommy will be two weeks old tomorrow. Happening WAY too fast! It feels like he has been around for much longer (I guess he has been with us for 9 months, we just couldn’t cuddle him!) Before he was born, I couldn’t imagine our family with a third child, now he is here I can’t imagine life without him. This is my favourite baby face…completely full up and drunk on Mum’s milk after a big feed… Remember how I said that we were blessed to have dinners provided for us ALL last week? This is Lil digging into a scrummy chocolate cupcake that was dessert one night – she was VERY impressed!
