Make It Perfect, Poppy Tunic

.A Poppy Parade – Day 1.

I considered sharing my latest three Poppy Tunics in one blog post, but was finding it hard to condense the number of photos I was using, so instead…let’s have a Poppy Parade for the next three days!

This first Poppy Tunic is a birthday present for my little sister, Filipa who turns 28 today.  Happy Birthday Filly!!! She is pretty pregnant at the moment, so I’m not sure if she will be able to squeeze it on but I’m sure it will be good and comfy to wear post-baby!

I loved this fabric-combo so much and was seriously considering holding onto it for myself!  The denim is brilliant to work with and easy to wear.  I’ve had this Anna-Maria Horner fabric in my stash for aaaages and always thought I didn’t like it, but I’m loving it in this tunic!

I’m seriously addicted to this pattern.  I love making the tunics and have been wearing mine to death and am just about to choose some more fabric for my next one!  It is so much more comfortable to wear than jeans on a cold day!

.KCWC – the end.

The last two days of KCWC were pretty light-on, sewing wise (but busy in every other regard!) I did manage to finish off these church pants for Oscar and Tommy.
They were started a few weeks ago and were put on the back-burner so this was a good excuse to pull them out and finish them off.
Both pairs are a little roomy at the moment, which is how I want them.  So that they will fit for at least a year, maybe more.  Because they only wear them for half a day every Sunday I know that they will last forever and am looking forward to using Oscar’s hand-me-downs for Tommy.
The pattern is my High Flyers boy’s pants.  It isn’t a difficult sew, but quite time consuming with loads of detail.  I used suiting fabric from a local fabric store (not sure what it is exactly though).  Oscar’s is a little thin so I’m considering popping on some knee patches just to make sure they hold up.

Here are my two happy little boys (one is apparently obsessed with teeth brushing at the moment!)

KCWC was a great way to get stuck into some “necessary” sewing.  Although it seems rather boring compared to most of the other things I usually sew, it feels good knowing that I’ve used up some of my supplies to make some much needed clothes for the kids and means that I don’t have to go to the shops – yippee!

P.S. Looks like someone else got all enthused and sewed some High Flyers for her boys during KCWC too – how funky are they??!

KCWC achievements – Days 4 & 5.

This cheeky little monkey is in need of new PJs – so that’s what was sewn for KCWC on days 4 and 5. I wanted to get them all finished last night but my sewing machine wasn’t cooperating.  So I cut them all out and then got out my back-up machine today and sewed them up (and now I’ve got to take my good machine to be looked at tomorrow).

I used my Slumber Party Jammies pattern, but forgot to include the drawstring in the waistband – I think the lack of sleep is starting to get to me!  I didn’t realise until I’d completely finished them and it was too late to pull them apart again!

I didn’t have the mojo to make the tops myself, so just bought some plain ones from Kmart and appliqued big stars (my favourite!) onto the sides.
This pair is for a special little friend’s birthday present
And that’s another big tick for “to sew” list!

Day Two of Kids Clothing Week Challenge.  Super simple, quick and easy – two pairs of leggings for Lil!
These were fun to make and have been on my “to sew” list for a long time.  I can’t believe how easy and quick they were – like 15 minutes from cutting to finish!  I’m never buying leggings again!

The pattern I used was based on “Cinnamon Leggings” in the Spring 1/2011 edition of Ottobre magazine.  These leggings were a bit short though so I also used a pair of store-bought leggings that we like and lengthened them and made a nice, narrow hem at the bottom.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned on my blog before how I like to finish the hems or do any exterior stitching on my knit fabric sewing.  I did use a twin needle for awhile, which was great.  But it was fussy too – always having to switch the needle around and making sure that I had two spools of thread plus a bobbin to use each time.  Plus I would break the needles ALL the time and they aren’t that cheap to buy!  I was looking through the stitches on my sewing machine and discovered a “triple straight stitch” – it is awesome.  Basically it sews forwards, backwards and then forwards again over every single stitch and while doing so, it creates a stitch that looks like a thick regular stitch but has a good amount of stretch to it too!  I use it all the time now and love it.  Looks much nicer than the other option of zig-zag.

Day Three of KCWC was a fizzler.  But I got to do something waaay cooler…I got to be with Ty and Sam while they had their first baby – Nancy Mae.  She is the most adorable thing EVER (seriously, she is one of “those” perfect looking babies) and the whole experience was absolutely amazing.  Sam was an super star trooper through her 30-hour long marathon labour and I feel so blessed to have been there.  I’ll share photos of little Nancy later on, once her Mum and Dad have had a chance to share them first but for now, here’s a pic of my brother just a few minutes after Nancy was born – true elation and pride!!!

Make It Perfect, Milkshake Skirt

.Milkshake x2.

I made these two skirts back in November, just before the Milkshake Skirt pattern was released, but realised that I haven’t shared them yet.  (Look at those little bruised legs!)

These skirts are really fun, both to make and to wear.  Lil chooses these all the time (when they are ironed, anyway!) and they have awesome twirling capabilities!

I’m thinking about joining in with the Kids Clothing Week Challenge over at Elsie Marley next week – is anyone else doing it??
