High Flyers, Make It Perfect

.New BOY pattern – HIGH FLYERS.

I know that the sewing pattern world is lacking decent patterns for boys…so let’s do something to change that – check out my latest pattern, High Flyers:

High Flyers are a handsome pair of pants that can both dress up and go casual with ease.  With these cool and comfy trousers in your little guy’s wardrobe, he’ll always be looking shipshape.

Featuring an elastic-backed, adjustable waistband, slim fitting legs, loads of pockets and an easy-to-sew fake fly opening, High Flyers will suit just about any occasion.

High Flyers can be given a more casual feel with the use of contrast topstitching detail and when sewn with denim they make a great pair of jeans.

I breathe a big sigh of relief as I send this pattern out today.  It has been one of the most time-consuming patterns that I have designed so far.  I know that so many of you have been crying out for more boy patterns, but to be honest, there isn’t a lot of variety when it comes to boy clothing.  After a bit of research (read: rummaging through wardrobes and examining my boy’s pants!) I came to the realisation that if you want to sew for boys, you need to spend time on details.  It’s these details that will help create a quality pair of pants that look as though they’ve come from your favourite clothing store.  Girl’s clothing has the advantage of using beautiful printed fabrics to give them detail, but when it comes to boys we mostly stick with plains, checks, or other toned-down fabrics so unless sewn details are added then your elastic-waisted pants will look a little slouchy and more like a pair of pyjama pants.

Having said all of that, I can assure you that it is NOT hard to make a tailored pair of boys pants.  I’ve worked really hard to simplify some tricky sewing techniques and make sure that High Flyers has all of the detail of a store-bough pair of pants with minimum fuss.

And what about that fly, I hear you ask?  I have to admit, I was scared of sewing a proper zippered fly to begin with.  I got over it though and worked it out and it isn’t that hard, but still a little tricky for a less-confident sewer…so instead of a zippered fly, High Flyers features a fake fly opening (yes, it opens, not just pretty topstitching) that is sewn shut half-way down.  So the pants are still easy to get on and off, but look as though they have the real-deal fly, without the tricky zippered opening.  Besides, what little boy wants to remember to do up his fly all the time anyway?!

I think you’ll enjoy making these – and it is a great satisfaction to sew something for your boy that looks as though it came out of a shop.

And I’m sure that your boy will dance some crazy moves in approval like my cool model Jake did!  Big thanks to my awesome photographer, Sally from Eden Lane Photography.  Her photos never disappoint – there are loads more on my website.  If you are looking for a photographer in the Sydney area, I highly recommend her!

Make It Perfect, Wonderland

.New pattern…WONDERLAND.

I’m feeling well overdue for a brand new pattern release, so am pleased to introduce you to Wonderland 🙂

The Wonderland dress is destined to be loved by girls of all ages.  A dress with a more formal approach, Wonderland is suitable for a special occasion…think birthday parties, weddings, special dinners.

The sweet ribbon trim on the dainty cap sleeves and skirt hem adds a gorgeous touch of detail, allowing you to use a more subtle fabric and let the ribbon shine!

With pleats galore and buttons down the back, Wonderland will be perfect for any fancy-do!

I am SO pleased with this gorgeous little dress.  My motivation behind it was that I needed something a little bit fancy – but not to fluffy and over the top.  I didn’t want the dress to be one that hung in the cupboard and was only every now and then because it was too “special”.  Wonderland is the perfect compromise!

The entire skirt is pleated around the top, which makes it look a little more classy and topped off with little cap sleeves and a neat row of buttons down the back, I think it is the cutest thing ever!

Wonderland is avaliable in two size ranges
6 months-5 years and
6 years-10 years
so none of your little girls will miss out on this one!

.March Cool Shops! CHASING COTTONS.

If you’re into quilting (or want to be into quilting) then you are going to love my next Cool Shop, Chasing Cottons

Chasing Cottons is a line of quilt designs created by Rebecca – an Aussie Mum from New South Wales.  I first met Bec at Australian Quilt Market in November last year.  She is the most beautiful person, inside and her love of sewing and quilting is evident in the passion and excitement she shares with everything she creates.

Chasing Cottons quilt patterns are beautifully presented with tons of diagrams and easy-to-read instructions.  They feature a lot of traditional quilting techniques which have been given a modern edge and are suitable for sewers of all skill levels.
If you follow a lot of sewing blogs, you may recognise Bec’s Sand Castle Quilt pattern.  I love, love, love this quilt!  Such a cool block design and I know that many little girls would happily fall asleep under the royal design.
If I saw a picture of this Curlicue Crush quilt, I would immediately put it in the “too hard” basket with all of those curves – but Bec swears that it is super easy – and I believe her!  This pattern reminds me of Christmas decorations and would make a beautiful Christmas quilt.
Eden’s Garden is Bec’s newest design, it is fully machine pieced and a lovely way to showcase your favourite fabric collection.
Chasing Cottons quilt patterns are avaliable as immediate download patterns from Bec’s shop.  Hard copies of the patterns are also avaliable at these stockists.

And if you are looking at all of these patterns thinking they are lovely but you don’t know how to quilt…then look no further!  Starting next month Chasing Cottons is going to be hosting Quilt Class 101.  A massive 12 weeks+ of FREE online quilting classes, teaching us all how to make a quilt from beginning to end.  It looks like Quilt Class 101 is going to be huge – with heaps of guest presenters, sponsors, freebies, and plenty of tutorials, tips and tricks.  If you want to learn how to make a quilt then stay tuned!  You can read more about Quilt Class 101 on Bec’s blog here.  I’m really looking forward to it, what an easy way to learn how to quilt with tons of instructions and tutorials in the one place.

And how about a pattern or two to use during Quilt Class 101?  Chasing Cottons is kindly giving away 2 patterns of your choice to 3 lucky winners!  Leave a comment to be in the running, winners will be drawn by random and give away will end on Sunday 20th March.

.January Cool Shops! CLARES PLACE.

Cool Shop! #2 for January is Clares Place…

Clare is a young stay-at-home mother of a beautiful two-year old, Chloe.  With a Bachelor of Education and qualifications in Interior Design under her belt, Clare needed something more to help her fulfill her creative outlet and six months ago started designing and writing patterns for gorgeous quilts under her label, “Clares Place.”

Clare’s patterns are bright and bubbly, beginner-friendly and quick to sew – what more can a busy sewer ask for?!  I received a very generous package in the mail from Clare last month containing each of her six lovely patterns.  I know the time and effort that goes into writing patterns, it is tedious work and long hours in front of the computer and Clare’s patterns are beautifully written.  I particularly love how the instructions are set out clearly and are easy to read and the addition of step-by-step colour photographs is awesome.

Clares Place patterns can be purchased from retail and online stores around Australia.  A complete list of stockists can be found here.  Clare has also recently decided to sell her patterns in pdf download format for a great price at her online store also.

Take a closer look at some of Clare’s patterns…
