.Blue toned tee.

Tommy’s new shirts for winter have been winners so far!  This one is so cool – it comes from Ottobre 4/2008.  #25 “Pekka T-Shirt”.

I love all the tones of blue with a little hint of green.  The top is long sleeved with a short sleeve overlay.  I must be a big fan of this look because I’m always drawn to tops like this!

This cute little man turns three on Friday – THREE?!  In some ways he is starting to seem really grown up, but mostly he still feels like the baby.  We have a 22 month age gap between all of our kids and I realised yesterday that if we had done that again after Tommy we would have a 14 month old baby now!  Isn’t it funny how at the time it feels okay but looking at it from a different perspective it seems totally crazy!  You definitley don’t know how much you can handle until you have no other option!

.”Hoops” tshirt.

From the latest Ottobre magazine, Summer 3/2012…#14 the “Hoops tshirt” for Lil.

Nice fitting t-shirt but the neckline is a bit too wide and gapey for my liking.  The pattern said not to add seam allowance around the neckline, so if I made it again, I would add the seam allowance.

I love using this funky Hilco Ringel ribbing around neckline/armholes and have done it quite a bit on my latest projects.  It is an awesome quality ribbing (kicks the pants off the dodgy, lame-stretch ones I’ve bought from Spotlight) and because you are only using a narrow strip, it’s worth buying the good stuff.  Plus, the colours are funky and add a fun pop of colour to an otherwise plain shirt.

The little owl is a Beutron iron-on patch motif I bought recently from a local craft store.  I made the tshirt with no idea what I would put on the front of it, if anything.  Then sifted through my box of goodies and remembered about it!  It suits the colours really well and was faster and easier than embellishing in any other way!

Since making this shirt (and cutting out another tshirt), I’ve cleaned out Lil’s wardrobe and realised that she has an abundance of tshirts – I think she could probably keep 3 or 4 little girls clothed!! But is lacking in the long-sleeved top department, so I’m onto those next!  I’m worried about not having any need to sew for her after this year when she goes to school full-time and won’t go through so many clothes 🙁

.Hoody.

I’ve been chugging through some more “necessity” sewing for the kiddos ready for winter.  Tommy seems to have had a growth spurt (yay!) and is lacking in tops.  I’ve been a subscriber to Ottobre Design magazines for a few years now and while I enjoy having a flick through them every now and then I have yet to actually sew anything from them!  They have been getting quite a workout over the last week!!

This is #25. “Eleven & One”striped hoody from Ottobre Design Spring 1/2011.  The pattern was for a short-sleeved top only, but I added long sleeves in the contrast red from the hood.  The pattern called for clear elastic tape around the entire neckline.  I didn’t have any and after a quick consult with Lisa, decided to leave it out.  To make sure the neck allowed for maximum stretch though, I used my triple straight stitch for all the neckline sewing.  It seems to be working fine without the elastic and doesn’t feel as though any stitches are going to pop.

The hoody is a lovely fit (with a bit of growing room) and nice and comfy and warm.  Oscar wants me to make one for him – which is saying something because trying to get him to wear long-sleeved/legged anything is a challenge!  I think hoods are always a winner with boys – what do you reckon?

.KCWC – Day 2 & 3 achievements.

Day Two of Kids Clothing Week Challenge.  Super simple, quick and easy – two pairs of leggings for Lil!
These were fun to make and have been on my “to sew” list for a long time.  I can’t believe how easy and quick they were – like 15 minutes from cutting to finish!  I’m never buying leggings again!

The pattern I used was based on “Cinnamon Leggings” in the Spring 1/2011 edition of Ottobre magazine.  These leggings were a bit short though so I also used a pair of store-bought leggings that we like and lengthened them and made a nice, narrow hem at the bottom.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned on my blog before how I like to finish the hems or do any exterior stitching on my knit fabric sewing.  I did use a twin needle for awhile, which was great.  But it was fussy too – always having to switch the needle around and making sure that I had two spools of thread plus a bobbin to use each time.  Plus I would break the needles ALL the time and they aren’t that cheap to buy!  I was looking through the stitches on my sewing machine and discovered a “triple straight stitch” – it is awesome.  Basically it sews forwards, backwards and then forwards again over every single stitch and while doing so, it creates a stitch that looks like a thick regular stitch but has a good amount of stretch to it too!  I use it all the time now and love it.  Looks much nicer than the other option of zig-zag.

Day Three of KCWC was a fizzler.  But I got to do something waaay cooler…I got to be with Ty and Sam while they had their first baby – Nancy Mae.  She is the most adorable thing EVER (seriously, she is one of “those” perfect looking babies) and the whole experience was absolutely amazing.  Sam was an super star trooper through her 30-hour long marathon labour and I feel so blessed to have been there.  I’ll share photos of little Nancy later on, once her Mum and Dad have had a chance to share them first but for now, here’s a pic of my brother just a few minutes after Nancy was born – true elation and pride!!!
