These guys are FERAL!

I have never met a more daring and disgusting bunch of youth…for mutual tonight (our church youth group for kids from 12-18 years) we had a “Who Dares Wins” activity. My goodness…I would never have been able to even touch some of the things they ate and did It was rotten, but these guys will try anything!

LIKE…

Eating whole raw onions…
Digging for lollies in flour (okay, that one was quite tame)…
Attempting to eat a whole dry weetbix (no drinking) in under 60 seconds – apparently this is impossible to do, no one could do it in under a minute…
Eating raw chillies…
Bobbing for apples in water filled with ice (you have to rememer that it is about 10 degrees here at night time!)…
Smashing an egg on your head – there were a couple of eggs that were hard boiled, but they didn’t know if it was hard boiled until the big smash…
Being blindfolded and digging around a pot full of cows tongues and pigs feet with your hands, choosing one and taking a big bite (this one was really, really gross!)…
Eating chocolate-coated wasabi balls – these looked good, but were bad…
Eating live – as in breathing, wiggling and moving – wattle grubs…
Yuck, yuck, yuck! I felt like throwing up just watching them all! It was an entertaining night, full of lots of laughs and quite a bit of dry-reaching! I have to take my hat off to Jacqui for the dare devel of the night though…that girl tried everything and was terribly feral!

Grandad and Granny! YAY!

Last night we were lucky enough to have a visit from Grandad and Granny! They have made a spur of the moment trip from Adelaide as Granny’s sister is unwell and they came to spend some time with her before she passes away. It was great for us, we were so excited to see them! They had dinner and a visit with us last night. Oscar loved being a show off and copying everything Grandad would say. It has been a year since they last saw him so they noticed a great difference in him. I have such wonderful grandparents, on both my Mum and Dad’s side of the family…how lucky are we??

A quiet week

Today I was in the laundry folding the washing when Oscar came in and grabbed a t-shirt and took it into the loungeroom. He came back into me a few minutes later saying “nice, nice” with the t-shirt half on, half off…and was so proud of himself for putting it on!On another note, I have been blessed with a dryer this week – it is brilliant!! It has been raining for a few weeks now and I have had wet washing everywhere, it was driving me crazy! Especially when I would have just finished hanging it all on the clothes horse and Oscar would come along and rip it all off!! I am trying really hard to only use the dryer when I HAVE to though…save money on electricity…but I have to admit I do get excited when I wake up on a wash day and it is raining! It makes the house smell so good and everything is warm and cozy!
We have had a quiet day today, I think it is snowing on the mountains because the air was FREEZING when we went for a walk this morning. We were going to go to the Deloraine Playgroup to check it out and see what we think of it, but when we got there, there was a note on the door saying that it has been called off for a few weeks. I did a bit of sewing this afternoon, getting some things together ready for another market on Saturday.

Recipe Monday

There is nothing better than comfort food on a cold, rainy day…we’ve been having lots of those lately, so I thought I would share my recipe for homemade gnocchi – it does take a little bit of preparation time, but it definately worth it! You can serve it with any pasta sauce.

HOMEMADE GNOCCHI
1kg potatoes, unpeeled
2 egg yolks
¼c grated parmesan cheese
1-1½c plain flour

Pierce potatoes in several places. Microwave on HIGH power for 15 minutes or until tender. Allow to cool. Peel and mash in a large bowl. Mix in yolks and cheese.
Gradually add flour until a soft dough is formed, mixing with hands (only use as much flour as is required). Knead gently on a lightly floured board.
Divide dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each out into a long rope about 1.5cm thick. Cut into 1.5cm lengths.
Shape by rolling with a fork. Dust in a little flour.
Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil, with a little salt added. Add gnocchi in batches. Stir and returnto the boil. Gnocchi are cooked when the rise to the surface. Remove with a slotted spoon. Continue with remaining gnocchi. Toss gently in pasta sauce and serve.

I Love Hats!

Oscars latest little obsession…HATS! He loves putting them on and looking at himself in the mirror and playing peek-a-book. He loves our hats more than his own, so he is always wearing an oversized hat when we go down the street! Great timing though, last winter it was impossible to keep a hat on his head so he is sure to be nice and warm this year!

Playing dress-ups…yes that is a pair of undies around his neck! Don’t ask…the knitted jumper on his back is one that we received in the mail that morning from Nana Coward in New Zealand (Oscar’s great-grandmother). She often sends us lovely warm hand-knitted jumpers that she has made – we love them!
